Inline DPI with ATLAS-1100 Platform
The Accolade Technology ATLAS-1100 Service Node (ASN) can be used in many different ways and this week we want to dig into how the platform can be used for inline Deep Packet Inspection (DPI).
Of the various use cases we have discussed, this one is unique in that it operates on live traffic as it flows across a network. We refer to this as inline configuration. This contrasts with augmentation configuration which operates on replicated or mirrored traffic and is typically used in conjunction with a network packet broker.
As an inline DPI appliance, the platform is used to limit or completely eliminate certain application traffic (e.g. Netflix) within or between networks. The targeted application(s) is usually determined based upon a policy that is set forth by the company or agency that is responsible for the network. For example, a company might want to discourage employees from viewing Netflix on the corporate network and thus block it totally. The appliance is configured with the specific applications that are to be limited or blocked. The deep packet inspection software, which is installed on the platform, analyzes traffic to identify application type and the Accolade flow classification feature is used to monitor, block or redirect the identified traffic.
